Why was it that the 2400 can't use the 3400s RAM? Or was it that it just can't use the 128MB module because the controller can't handle it?

Wow!  I thought they were both 144pin SODIMMs.  Or is it a height/width deal?

Well, if you mean the RAM chips, they might (probably) are the same thing. The RAM cards are very different. The 3400 uses a 5300/190 style card. The 2400 uses (from what I have seen) an SODIMM similar to modern designs.
