Another alternative is to try a HD utility like FWB, if you can mount it then Diskwarrior might be able to salvage the directory.
Grasping at straws here...sorry.
Thanks for the help - but no software I have (Norton, TT Pro, DiskWarrior, Mt. Everything) recognise the drive, so it can�t diagnose it.
