Think of it this way, Photoshop needs all the computational help it can get to do its trickery. Specifically help from a chip dedicated to crunching numbers.

They made an amazing difference in things like photoshop and other such
things. Remember Macs were used for things like graphic design and various
other static image things long before video.
Exactly, but that's all non-realtime image rendering, no?
