Don't give up yet. You need to know _exactly_ what kind of modem you
have, which may require you to open up the 280. Then you probably need
the modem software for that particular modem. I'll have more later as
time permits.

The battery may be recoverable in the following way:

Drain the battery using two slightly bent needles stuck in the (+) and
(-) contacts and the surrounding plastic. That is, one needle for the
positive terminal and one for the negative terminal (They are marked on
the battery). Use a 10 to 100 Ohm resistor and 2 three or four foot
lengths of stranded wire, 14 gauge, with alligator clips on each end to
short between the two needles. Make sure you keep the battery cool
during this time. You can use a fan or even leave it in the
refrigerator (not the freezer) during or before you do this. Leave the
short circuit until the measured voltage is around 7-15 millivolts while
the wires are in place. Then try recharging it again. You may have to
repeat three times to get a reasonable length of battery time and then
have to do it once a month afterwards. I have had about a 50% success
rate so far with normal battery life usual result (not always).

Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant
