I was in the second floor of the barn where there are no lights, so I decided to go into the camper, which is probably not the best environment for learning how to take a computer apart. Anyway, I got it apart OK, but in the process managed to tear the strip that connects the trackpad to the rest of the computer. (I probably should have waited for dylan to do the translation of genchans website. I would like to see it anyway, before I open it up again.)
Ouch. You'll never find that part alone for anything less than a whole pad/ribbon assy. I have a trackpad/duo 2300 top in my closet to prove it ;)
On a good note, after I put it back together, I did have some success by bending the prongs inside the adaptor together a little. Is it possible to use a use a powerbook without a trackpad?
Yes, it'll plug right in, but you'll need a 210-280-style case top half. It's a direct swap as long as you have the bits. Should be fairly readily available on eBay and the swap list. I think I'd have a spare case-top lying around myself, no good trackballs though.
Or, you could just use an external mouse on a *dock or ADB hack and leave the trackpad unconnected/out all together. If you're really good at soldering and/or quite lucky, you might could repair the cable. I managed to make mine work for another week or two, long enough to get a new pad.
