Retrospect and DeskTape have been mentioned and are both good programs which I use often. But a free alternative is suntar (which is short for Sprezia's untar). Try http://allmacintosh.forthnet.gr/files/suntar.hqx or http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/Archive/cmp/suntar-223.hqx I've heard that there is a version 2.3 out there, but I cannot find it.
