That is true that the hard drive is most likely the cause of the noise, but if the drive doesn't get enough power it will not spin up enough to boot and it will make that noise. The fact that you get a partial boot sometimes make me suspect a power problem. I have duplicated this a few times, it only takes a small power drop to make the hard drive fail. But it does not always cause damage to the drive. If you can boot externally it still may be a power problem. If you can boot then run a hard drive test.
