You need the "Apple CD-ROM 5.3.1" extension which is easily found online.
Then you should be able to use your non-Apple player all the way through 9.2.2.
But 9.1? How does it compare to 8.6 in these 2300's?

I recently stuck 9.1 on my 2300 to make it as much like modern Macs for software testing purposes, it's about the same as 8.6 in just about every way memory and speed wise. Maybe a tad more memory usage.
