I'd like to add that over years of living in the Maine boonies I've had great success using a Diamond SupraExpress external 56K serial modem. Unlike with GV, you don't need to install any extra software for it to run just fine on the Mac OS.
As for browsers, there's surely no accounting for taste. Some prefer today's
iCab (which still offers even a 68K version) or the venerable and reasonably
bug-free but noncompliant Netscape 4.8, but there's a terrific, debugged version
of Mozilla 1.3.x for Classic available these days from <wamcom.org/> which seems
by far the best of the lot!

I too can vouch for both Supra and USR/3com external modems. I have two 2300c's and a 270c and my external 56K USR modem works great! I also have a NewerTech UltraDock 16sce, so I readily have cable access to my PB's.
As for browsers, it is a great testament to the Mac platform and the developer that we STILL have a 68K browser that is almost 100% compliant. I could be wrong but I do not think there is anything similar for 16 bit win3.x users.
As soon as I get my StarMax 3000/240, I'll be looking into compiling a recent version of Mozilla for those , like myself , that do not have X on all their machines.
Sincerely,
