Ok, here are a couple of things to try. First, make sure Excel has enough memory allocated to it to run. (Get Info, Memory, and allocate a bunch of RAM to it) Or turn Virtual Memory on and see what happpens.
Also, restart and rebuild the desktop (hold down Apple+Option).
