I was interested in using an 802.11b wireless network at my

it something I can find freely and easily? Thanks!

NO. The VPN client depends entirely upon the VPN server and/or software used. The university should be able to supply you with client software, or tell you which VPN client is compatible. Mac VPN clients are few and far between, however. I use Netgear hardware VPN here and no client software is required. I also use a Farallon Skyline card in my PowerBook 2400C with great results.
