Cardbus is simply a faster 32-bit version of PCMCIA. That is ALL. There are 3 kinds of PC Cards, whether they be 16-bit or 32-bit (cardbus). Type I and II cards are the standard size and will physically fit inside any laptop with a PC Card slot. Type III cards are double the thickness of standard cards and will only fit into machines with a compatible slot. Machines that have 2 slots are advertised as having (2)TypeI/TypeII Slots or (1) Type III. If you insert a 32-bit(cardbus) card into a 16-bit slot it will do no physical damage whatsoever. It simply will not work. Some cards can autosense which type of slot they are in to function in either. You can get a non-cardbus wireless card that will function in older Mac laptops, but yoou need to make sure it will do so before buying.

Lies! A cardbus card will NOT fit into a non-cardbus cage (unless you
physically modify the card). If you force it in, you WILL damage the
cage.

f you insert a cardbus card into a non cardbus unit it does appear on the desktop, but it does not work and the machine does not always know

Let me put my $.02 into this...
I *just* tried a USB cardbus card in my 2400c/320 and my 3400c/180 while both were running; The cards each fit easily into both machines' card cages. Here are the results:
The 2400c (OS9.1) immediately gave me a "Finder Needs Attention" message. After that, the mouse moved around, but nothing could be chosen. Color it frozen...
The 3400c (OS8.6) did not see the card at all, BUT I do not have any USB software installed on the 3400c, whihc of course comes with the OS9 on the 2400c...
So, I guess my 2400c is not cardbus...
