The cheaper way is to replace the backlight but a little experience is needed
I did it with a powerbook 1400 LCD lamp (a bit longer but it fits)
Someone in the list bought the lamp from digikey www.digikey.com (2mmx218mm
ccfl)

Here's an extract from an old post by Donald McCaig:
"One lamp. Very fragile, needs to be soldered at both ends.
Disassembling the screen is fairly straight-forward and you needn't open
the computer. Just unscrew the four screws in the case (see diagram in
repair manual) and set to. The lamp's under the inverter board, the last
thing to be disassembled."
