Thanks, duoman. Turns out the Ethernet control panel installed by UD was blocking things,
and I was able to connect by ethernet when it was removed.
I also upgraded to OS 8.1 for convenience of networking with my other Macs at home.

Hi chriss-

It does sound like a reinstalled OS would be needed, then run the Ultradock 
installer (with the UD connected) on that fresh system. The ethernet drivers 
are invisible and inserted into the System file (if I'm remembering correctly 
how it works) so a Clean System Install is the only way to clear possibly 
corrupted drivers...
