Have you ever used a $300 Dell laptop?  Ick. :-)

You can force Intel OS X to run on non-Apple Intel hardware, the problem is drivers. Since laptops tend to use proprietary hardware, OS X's more "generic" driver set is not going to do much for you on a cheapo Dell-top. So you might make it run, but you won't have sound, you won't have LAN, you won't have native video support, etc.

If you're looking for a cheap OS X laptop, Pismos are still great! Not exactly slim and trim like Duos / 2400s, but still, viable machines. FWIW, I picked up a 12" G4 for under 700 bucks on eBay earlier in the year, and it's a great little machine.
