If your 2300c has less than 20 MB of RAM then you should stick to 7.6.1. If you want the 8.x LOOK, you can install the appearance CP and Appearance extension from a machine running 8.1 (running the installer won't work). If you have 20+ then go for 8.x., but not 8.5 unless you have greater than 40+ MB Also, don't forget to shut off VM, it slows down the machine Another tip is to disable ALL the extensions you don't need, not only for the RAM useage, but also because it wakes up from sleep faster with fewer extensions. Antoher thing to watch out for is to diligently switch off appletalk when you don't need it: Having Appletalk on when it is not attached to a network slooooows down wake ups as the machine searches the nonexistent network connection for a network address. I use NAV 4.0.6 on my Duo 230 12/500 with 7.6.1 and have no problems there (aside from the RAM tightness) When at home, I have a network connection ready for the Duo. It is via localtalk passing through a localtalk Ethenret router, but that is kinda complex, ideally you should get an Ethernet Microdock and have an ethernet cable handy whenever you go home. You can then transfer files back and forth with ease. Incidentally, I've just acquired a Newton MP130, which I disliked immediately. It is so big that it can't fit in any pocket and I have to carry it: I might as well just carry my Duo, which can do more stuff than the newton can. Another problem unique to me is that my handwriting is terrible. I don't even write with a pen anymore except to affix my signature, using a keyboard is input method of choice (120 WPM typing, and about 10 WPM by pen <g>).
