Adding to Sidney's excellent post, one should also update the drive's 
drivers when faced with a "dead" drive.  Also, there is no excuse for 
unbacked-up data --- it's too easy and too cheap to have a backup 
solution these days.

Disk Warrior does only one thing: rebuild disk directories.  But it does 
this so much better than TechTool and Norton that the other programs 
should be ashamed of themselves.
