I tried putting my 2300 trackpad on my 280c and the 280c would not
acknowledge the trackpad even with the control panel and extensions
installed. Unless someone else can verify this works (and how), replacing
your trackball with a trackpad on the 230 is not likely.

And yes, you can just stick your 2300 board in your 230 and have it work. All
of the connections are the same. There are no practical differences in the
bottom of the case, however, there is a specialized heat sink you will need
to install under the CPU stiffener or your CPU will melt. I believe Apple
shipped the logic board upgrade in an assembled bottom case as a cost saving
measure. It was cheaper to preassemble it in order to make the switch out
quick & easy at your local dealer service shop. To have forced your tech to
completely disassemble the Duo (which is what's required) to install the new
logic board would have been even more cost prohibitive than the upgrade
already was and allows more room for error. It also reduce the amount of
packaging they would have had to ship it in as a logic board alone. This way,
the factory in Ireland where the Duo was made, simply completed the
production run of 2300s then continued making the bottom half of the product
to fulfill the upgrades without changing any part of the manufacturing
process. In essence, Apple shipped you the bottom of a 2300 without the
trackball assemby, hard drive. memory and modem. There is no difference
between them. The 2300 needed higher voltage to run properly which is why
they gave you the new adapter. The old adapter works, but Apple does not
support it. So, you would probably need to buy this as well. All Duo
batteries will work with the 2300, but type I & II have very short battery
life compared to the type III due to the 2300s increased power requirements.

But, if you are going to do all of this, you will spend far more money trying
to upgrade your 230 to a Power PC with a trackpad than simply buying a 2300
from eBay. Then if you don't like the trackpad, you can just swap tops with
your 230. The only justification I can see for doing what you propose is if
you absolutely need a grayscale screen for your work.
