When you run a Mac OS system installer, you have the
option to install a system specific to your computer
or a "universal" system, which has the proper code for
all models of Macintosh (read: lots of wasted space). 
I believe this option is under "custom install", but I
can't exactly remember - and I am away from home and
am forced to use a Windoze box (gasp), as my Duo 280
is slightly out of sorts.

BTW, I like the Linux thread.  I am thinking of
running 8.6 within LinuxPPC.  Can't recal the name,
offhand, of the app that lets you do this but I am
sure someone else on the list knows.
