Our longrunning discussions regarding hot-swapping external devices reminds me to ask about the advisability of (a) putting my PB [2400] to sleep; (b) then powering down my SCSI, external monitor, and other externals; (c) then powering them all back up before (d) reawakening the PB? As with many of us, I prefer sleeping the PB over shutting it down. But since shutting down the externals is literally a flick of a switch (all off one powerstrip), I'd also prefer to shut them down while the PB (and I) are sleeping. This practice violates the "official" shut down sequence: CPU first, then SCSIs. Then I power up the externals before reawakening the PB. With the extensions loaded at initial startup, the PB doesn't seem to notice that the externals were shut down (not hot-swapped) while it was sleeping. Zips and CDs as well as my external monitor work fine. By the way, upgrading to 8.6 seems to have cleared up a bug where the PB would freeze when reawakening with an external monitor (Apple FPD) attached -- without the attached monitor there would be no problem reawaking. And a side question on hot-swapping: there seems to be some disagreement on hot-swapping video out to external monitors while in sleep mode.
