No, they're not - they're rated for a lower peak amperage, 1.04A vs. 1.5A
in the newer model. That upgrade happened with the 280 (my 270c had the
older type of supply). All are 24V supplies, so they do work
interchangeably. The only problem you might note using an older supply with
a 2400 for long periods would be if the power draw exceeded the 24 Watts
available, in which case the Powerbook would slowly draw from the battery.
In fact I don't think this would happen with a 2400 (perhaps in some
far-out case with two type II PCMCIA cards, a flat battery, a GeoPort
modem, and SCSI termination power being supplied).
The other effect of lower power availability might be the battery charging
more slowly while the Powerbook is in use. I've never particularly observed
that on a 2400 either, but I have on a 3400 using an old Duo supply
(keeping in mind that the 3400 can potentially draw much more power). If
this leads you to feel that they're not interchangeable, note that the 3400
and G3 power supply is rated at 45W (not sure about the 1400).
I do use a Duo 230 supply with my 2400 about half the time without
incident, and you can use a tool like Jeremy Kezer's Energy Strip to
actively watch how much power your 2400 is depriving the world of - you'll
find it's generally nowhere near 24W. The 36W supply is just nicely
overengineered (as far as the 2400 goes, anyway).
