Marc, you're right on target. There IS NOT a separate "signal" wire that
would pass on this info. The voltage is how hard the adaptor pushes on
the electrons to move them thru the PB; the amperage is the number that
are actually moved thru at any time. A lower-rated supply might not be
able to deliver enuf (milli-)amps before it can't push each one hard
enuf; this might be accompanied by an increased "noise" level
accompanying the power. That noise (various multiples of 60 pulses/sec,
mostly 120/sec) could potentially get thru the power filtering onboard
the PB and confuse or disrupt its circuits. But my experience with Duo
bricks on my 2400c is entirely satisfactory, both before and after my G3
upgrade.
OTOH, the heavier usage might make the brick run a little warmer than
its designers were happy about, and possibly stress _its_ components.
The most likely consequence of this would be a premature failure of the
already surplus brick, something that most of us would accept with a
shrug of our shoulders.
