Richard,
I only just got a 2300c (yesterday! -- I've been using a 230 up until now),
but I've been checking it out and noticed the same thing as you about the
colours. From what I understand by reading the AppleSpec database
<http://www.info.apple.com/applespec/applespec.taf>, the 2300c just doesn't
have enough VRAM (video memory) to support 32,000 colours at 640x480.
Therefore it must switch to 640x400 (the same resolution as the 230 and
other b/w Duos) to be able to display that many colours. Sorry that I don't
have better news. Maybe I'm misinformed though and someone knows better.
