Without even opening my trusty 2300, I have the answer to your question. Using
the Apple Service Source Manual from 1995, I looked up the logic board
connectors for the 2300. On the logic board are both FSTN (passive) and TFT
(active matrix) connections. Consider further that this is the "stock" logic
board for the 2300 and not the upgrade, as none of the 2xx series Duo chapters
in the manual mention the PPC upgrade (nor does the 2300 chapter for that
matter). The other various upgrades offered at the time (210/230 to 250, 250 to
280, 270c to 280c) are mentioned, however. Therefore, I would assume that at
this point in the Duo development (late '94/early '95), they were not even
offering the PPC upgrade. But, they clearly planned for it and implemented it in
the most cost effective manner possible, one logic board with dual video and
dual drive capabilities. AFAIK, the 2300 is the only PowerBook to offer dual IDE
& SCSI support. Now we can add dual passive & active matrix support as well!
Long live the Duo!
