I think it is built into some part of the MacOS - it should work in 
SimpleText, BBEdit, Alpha, etc. - basically any application that uses 
that aforementioned part of the OS to deal with text.  I don't think 
it's a Microsoft only or Eudora only or XYZApp only sort of feature. 
In fact, I can command-click on an email address without a preceding 
mailto when I'm in SimpleText, and Eudora pops up a blank message 
window to that address.  I run a pretty basic MacOS 8.6.

And John, as to why http works but ftp doesn't, is it possible that 
you haven't picked a helper app for ftp in your Internet (or Internet 
Config) control panel?
