I can only give you my experience with one model -- the Simple Technology
Type II SmartMedia Adapter. It works 100% of the time, is far faster than
serial cables or 'FlashPath' diskette-drive adapters, and is as reliable as
can be. Slide the SmartMedia card into the adapter, push the adapter card
into the PowerBook, and a PC hard disk appears on the desktop. My Olympus
D400Z camera automatically creates jpg files. You don't even need any
special software, if you just want to see and print the pictures -- just
double-click on a file and it opens in QuickTime's picture viewer.
Alternatively, drag a file's icon onto Adobe PhotoDeluxe, PhotoShop,
ColorIt, or Polaroid PhotoMax for editing, or have JPEGView run a slide show
right off of the SmartMedia card.
