Marc,
Glad you asked that question. I've been getting exactly the same result. It
may have something to do with the Type III batteries. I've heard some say
that they don't need to be reconditioned like the NiCads, but have heard
others say that there are ways to make them run and last longer.

On the advice of William Ove I've gone to 8.1 too, and there a lot of
reasons to run it if you have enough RAM. For one thing you can drag a
window by its border and actually move the title bar up and off the screen,
which is nice for viewing windows you can't resize.
