Since some of this has been covered in bits and pieces on the List
I'm pleading research laziness, but with a promise to summarize it
for mac2400...along with the postings I've been collecting on
Airport/PB 2400, OS X/PB 2400(good stuff Tom), and 'Green Light of
Death'.
Here's the story:
Looks like I can get cable modem access now at home and ADSL is a
long way off. Given that, I'm looking for feedback on a number of
issues, primarily what brand of Ethernet card(s) to buy and any
recommendations on setting up my network.
Here's the plan:
I want to network at least two computers to the cable modem, both in same room.
RoadRunner cable to House --> RR Cable Modem provided -->Ethernet
Router or Switch --> Router to PB 2400 and to Wintel laptop.
Questions:
1. Recommended Ethernet PC cards? 10BT required, do I gain anything
by going to 100T, i.e., duplex. Farallon seems to be the most
popular solution at around $100 each.
With or without V.90 modem integrated. (Already have V.90 cards on
both laptops)
2. Pro's and Con's of Router vs Switch. Not quite sure how RR will
see my laptops, i.e., one or two machines. I understand the switch
would provide better performance.
3. If I was rich and bought two new Farallon WaveLan 11MB cards(at
$250+ each?) and an Apple Airport would that mitigate the need for
the router/switch, i.e., Airport serving as router.
4. Recommended firewall software, since BlackIce is windows only I think.
5. Since I can't dial-up RR while away from home, the question of a
free ISP for checking my mail('read only' to their mail server) while
on the road/around town now seems relevant....though an AOL disk I
suppose is a possible backup for a roadtrip.
Thanks for digesting this...
