Hi, David and Nick and fellow UK Duolistas--
1) I got a Duo battery through Yahoo UK auctions for about 25 pounds but it
didn't work the first time and it had to be replaced; in my experience
(having bought loads of stuff through the Internet and on eBay), auctions
can be a great source of hard-to-find goodies (often dirt-cheap), but
batteries have always been a very iffy thing--even if they'e advertised as
"new" and come in a virginal box. I'd imagine that Duo batteries, wherever
you find them (except for the independent manufacturers) must be several
years old!
2) David--your 250's screen is going through the classic "TV
syndrome"--corners darkening (happens on 280 screens. too--B/W active
matrix). Shutting down and letting the Duo cool off for a while will make it
go away--but only a for a while (and what's the use of a shutdown Duo?). Try
and source a replacement Duo screen on eBay if you can (will go for around
30-50 pounds, I guess). About your hard disk--I trashed a Toshiba 800 MB
like that a year ago but somehow revived it through Silverlining (which I
know you've tried) and TechTool Pro, using an external drive to reformat the
disk and load the system. If you're anywhere in the Norwich area and would
like us to have a go at it, send me an e-mail off-list; I'd be glad to help
any way I can.
Cheers
Jose Dalisay (in Norwich)

"Help please" looks like I've killed my 250 i.e. I was installing a new
system when it crashed and now nothing, I can't see the H/D and Norton says
it irreparable have had a go at reformatting with about all the tools I can
find i.e. Hard Disk ToolKit, Silverlining, Anubis, and many more but all
with no joy. Any thoughts or is time for a new drive or worse. P.S. the
drive was a 500meg which I guess is not standard! and one other thing was
that when it had been on for a short time the screen would start to go very
dark at the corners and gradually it would get worse. Has the poor chap
come to the end of its life ?
