FWIW, I have used iPass, and found it difficult to use and
occasionally expensive. I have never been able to configure my
Powerbook to send e-mail with an iPass mail server, and depending on
the number you call, charges can be up to $12/hr.
My ISP (DNAI, in Berkeley, CA) tried to cancel iPass service because
there were so many problems with it that they didn't want to do the
necessary support. They rescinded the cancellation because so many
people complained
So there you have it--great service, but difficult to use for many
people. Probably better than using your calling card if you are
travelling in (say) Turkey, but within the US, it is often easier and
not much more expensive to just make a long-distance call!
