That makes it sound like a hardware problem.

That makes it sound specifically like a bad solder joint, or some 
other form of bad connection.

Try setting things up for a null modem file transfer.  Before 
starting, apply some pressure on the port and connector -- push the 
connector in towards the computer and down.  Not real hard, just 
firm.  Hold it and start the transfer.  If that affects things, or 
even reliably allows the transfer to work, it's almost certainly a 
bad solder joint on the back panel connector.

If it's bad solder joints, the fix is low-tech: just reflow the 
solder joints with a good iron.  Disassembling the 2400 is much worse 
than the actual cure.  :)
