Ah, the duo "software" modem problem. It only gets worse with
9. Apple Support recommended physically removing the modem. A
much less complicated method: disable the Apple Express modem
control panel and install the Powerbook Setup control panel from
8.1; after rebooting, select the Normal radio button on PB setup
panel and you should be able to access the modem.
