Speaking of MacIP, there used to be a number of dedicated hardware devices
which could act as MacIP servers. We still have one here at work- it's a
Cayman Systems GatorBox. Not only can it do TCP/IP inside of Appletalk
(funny- the future is AppleTalk inside of TCP/IP ;) but it's also an
AppleTalk seed router, and a ethernet to localtalk bridge.
Cayman Systems no longer supports them, but here's a generic info page about
them:

And here's Cayman's page:

Good luck,

Very interesting... Just downloaded and read... Let's look at your
original email...

AppleTalk will, just set AppleTalk to connect via Modem/Printer Port (or
whichever port its connected to), but yes, TCP/IP will NOT work.

I believe 7.6 and higher actually REQUIRE Open Trasnport (not 100%), but
I don't think you'd want to do that anyway.

Yes, MacIP. MacIP is the process of encapsulation TCP/IP packets into an
AppleTalk packet. Since this adapter CAN be used with AppleTalk under
Open Tranport, this is your only way. The only problem with MacIP, is
breaking the IP packets OUT further down the chain. I know of two
products that do this: Vicomsoft Internet Gateway (or SurfDoubler,
SoftRouter, basically anything in their product line) and IPNetRouter
(MUCH cheaper though much more difficult to configure and understand).
This application would have to run on a middle-man macintosh and break
your TCP packets out of your MacIP packets thereby giving you full TCP/IP
connectivity.

That's unfortunate, because that will work!
That's the best I can offer.
