Paul,

this is one of the reasons for using a dock. Normally the AppleTalk
settings will switch automatically to "modem/printerport" upon
disconnecting from the dock - AT should be set to "printer port" when
you have your LocalTalk cable plugged into the respective connector at
the back of the dock you can check this in the AppleTalk control panel.

crash, "AppleTalk
>cannot be turned on"type-messages.
If I remember correctly, OS 7.6 came with Open Transport 1.1., hence with
Apple Talk for OT. If you have the "use classical networking" option in
the AppleTalk control panel (or was there even an OT control panel
then?), you might give it a try. Apart from this, upgrading to OT 1.1.2
or 1.3 is recommended (sw is avaiulable from Apple's ftp-servers and
mirrors).

This points to a software conflict, most likely OT is the culprit, but
you should also look for other extensions and the corresponding control
panels which configure the serial ports (e.g. "modem", having activated
the "receive" option in fax software is also a common source of problems).
If all fails you might consider a hardware problem in the dock. Have you
tried connecting the Duo to a different dock? Or vice versa?
I'm only guessing of course, hoping it helps
