Dear people,

Forgive me if this sort of thing is covered often on the list, but I have not
been here long and I did do a fair bit of web/newsgroup research before
posting.

A friend, discovering that I too now have a duo270 and have just got hold of
a Duo Dock (what a Godsend!) wants me to fix their 270, but I'm not getting
far.

On bootup, I get happy mac, 'welcome' even, then it shuts down. Does the same
on power adaptor, and the same sitting in the Dock. So I zap the PRAM, the
only effect of which is that on next startup I get no happy mac but just a
pretty tune played on a xylophone, and complete darkness on the screen.

So I pulled out the battery (type3), and now the machine boots fine from
power adaptor or Dock. Fine, I think, bad battery. Try a known-good battery
(type2), only to return to previous non-booting state. Ever the fool, I
tried the apparently bad battery in my own machine, only to have it
apparently wreck that one with the same symptoms! Mine has recovered since,
and feels well.

I have looked into the battery bay and it looks fine, with the requisite five
copper prongs all sticking out properly. Do people think that there is some
sort of short-circuit within the battery connectors in the machine, or is
there another issue I have missed? I have not yet got hold of a Torx 8 to
open the machine up - I suppose this would be the next step. The user makes
much use of the machine when in the field (literally - environmental
research) so really does need to be able to use it with a battery.

It is a 270c, OS 7.5, 12Mb.

Would be very grateful for any help. thank you.
