You may be using a screen dimmer and the Apple Energy Saver CP (as in my
case) with different times. Whenever it happens (occasionally for me), you
can revive the black screen by pressing the screen brightness control
(dimming, assuming you have it already set at max) just a couple of clicks
and then brightening again. In my case this immediately revives the screen.
Let us know if this works and if you are using two pieces of software
controlling screen dimming. Since it is sporadic, it may also have to do
with whatever piece of software is in the active window--nothing I've
bothered to determine but I'm always curious.
