Hello Michael: I used a Mac Plus for two years and found it satisfactory. I designing a house using MiniCad, ran structural calculation spreadsheets using Excel, programmed various Hypercard databases and wrote many reports and letters with MS Word on that machine! It had 4 mb RAM and a second, external floppy drive. I remember with some nostalgia how pleasant it was to work without the constant whine of a hard drive. If your can find a supply of upgraded Pluses i.e. 4 mB RAM and a small (internal) hard drive, those machines should work nicely for word processing. Otherwise I'd look for Classics or SE/30s. You can't use the current OS or the latest application software, but then that could be an advantage. The earlier OSes were simpler, faster and I don't recall having anywhere near the stability problems with my old Plus that I have now. And early versions of application software can likely be picked up for free. Still, Paul Nelson's suggestion you talk to lowendmac.com before you decide is good advice. Incidently, I taught writing in an earlier life and I have always thought the computer could be a useful writer's aid. Unfortunately, at that time the PC didn't exist!
