Instead of a crossover cable ($10), you can use a hub and two regular cables but this is more expensive ($60). 2) MacOS 8 or above with the Web Sharing extension, control panel Setup up your TCP/IP Control panel to use the ethernet card and give it some IP address, say 168.92.62.30 (Configure manually). Leave the domain, name server addr and gateway fields blank. You can use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask. Open the filesharing control panel and turn filesharing on (you may need to set the appletalk control panel to use ethernet for the connection, although you won't really be using appletalk). Open the web sharing control panel and "start" web sharing. Give everyone read access and set the shared folder to be the one with the files you want to transfer. On the Toshiba laptop, set the Network control panel TCP/IP preferences as follows: IP address, say 168.92.62.31 (the first three units of digits have to match those of your laptop, the last one has to be different from your laptop between 2-250). Gateway blank, subnet mask same as yours. domain, WINS and DNS servers can be blank, too. Fire up a web browser on the Toshiba laptop and go to the url http://168.92.62.30 (same IP as your powerbook). Note http, not ftp. If your web sharing preferences are set up correctly, your friend will see a list of the files/folders in the shared web directory appearing as links. Right-clicking on any of them and selecting "download to disk" will start the download of that file from your laptop. Expect about 30k/sec transfer rate. I haven't actually tried this so I may be forgetting some details - but I know this works. If you run into errors, email me off-list since I have a Windows notebook I can try this on, too. -Raphael ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
