David,

I believe the display will only dim for the purposes you describe.  As a 
commercial web hosting service, we learned long ago never to spin down 
your HD.  I know a lot of folks will raise eyebrows at the thought of a 
2300 being any type of server, but it's a great test box.  We used one as 
a secondary http and mail server for months.  However, we did it from a 
dock.  Good for you!
