Jan Niggemann confirmed that the question is solved:
After googling around for quite some time, I found some hints to point me in
the right direction:
Error message in English is "Value too large for defined data type" , error
code is EOVERFLOW.
The problem was that I tried to install from a CIFS mount with NTFS.
Solution
Moved the duplicity directory to my ~ and installed from there - worked
flawlessly.
