For the sake of debugging I moved my backup set, created a clean backup, ran it again, same issue.. AFAIK this pretty much eliminates data corruption as a reason, so it's either the server sending garbled text.. (It didn't change since the last time when it did work..) or the interpretation of the XML which may have changed with updated dependencies over time.. But I'm no expert in that field, I trust your judgement..
