Follow-up Comment #1, bug #22734 (project duplicity):

"'long file names' are not Windows-friendly" (is what the bug title should
read; something submitted the form before I’d finished typing!)

For reasons out of my control, I’m backing up to a remote Windows
filesystem. I’m forced to choose 'short-file-names' since the ':' in the
long file names screws up things on Windows. (You get a 'directory not found'
error.) If the ':' wasn't there, NTFS (and VFAT) would manage the long
filename fine.

Would it be possible to change the long filename format for new archives to
avoid unusual characters.
