Follow-up Comment #4, bug #25092 (project duplicity):
I should have seen this sooner!
A fresh USB HDD is almost always formatted as FAT or NTFS, and neither one
supports duplicity filenames. Add the option
--time-sep='_'
to your command line and it should work.
