Are you using very long filenames (like those *.nuv files saved from mythtv) and/or working within a very deep directory structure? I have found that dvbcut can grow its main window (and thus the sliders) well beyond that needed for editing - just so the status line at the bottom can show the complete file path while the indexing is happening.
