Actually, around the same time, I had been getting desktop lockups
shortly after starting openoffice calc. The app window would almost be
ready to use, and then the whole desktop would stop, except for the
mouse moving the mouse pointer around the screen. (I show seconds on the
gnome clock, and thi would stop as well).

After much ado, I decided to change from the xorg-x11-drv-nouveau to the
RPM Fusion package nvidia driver. This immediately solved the oo calc
crash on startup.

I hadn't used dvbcut for a while. When I have used it again yesterday, I
noticed that the pointer ghosts are no longer present. Yey, but why ?
I checked var/log/yum.log, and nothing really stood out to do with qt3
etc, and then I noticed the xorg driver change. I haven't reverted to
the open source nouveau driver to confirm, but it seems likely.

Thanks for the help.
