However, last week we encountered problems with dvipng. Under some
cirumstances certain characters are not printed:

1. Can you reproduce the problem?
Yes. A previously loaded font (fplmri) is wrongly identified as fplmr.
That is why the ordering of the characters is important. It was very
good that you provided a simple test case.
2. Do you have any idea what we are doing wrong?
My fault, I am afraid. Patch included. This will be in the next release.
