You may already be doing this, but if not: Would it be difficult to allow a moderator/maintainer to lock individual posts within her community so there can be no more comments? LJ allows freezing of individual comments, but not of posts. On most other BBS systems a mod has the ability to close a post down so it stands but can't be added to. It's a way of allowing free discourse, but not to the point of beating a dead horse.
