Well, that's not that much of a surprise if you have played around with something like xfontsel... The reason "fixed" is a problem is due to the alias definition. E.g. on my system /usr/X/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias contains: fixed "-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1" So "fixed" is aliased to "fixed...-iso8859-1" and will not work with a UTF-8 locale, while "fixed...-*-*" will.
