I'll second Alessandro's argument about a left side menu.
Horizontal lists require the user to scan across all the words when looking for a known object. Vertical lists allow you to see just the beginning and jump straight to the next topic if it doesn't match. (Which doesn't make much sense). If you're looking for "fox" in: apple bear cat dog elephant fox giraffe then you have to scan across all the letters from [a]pple to elephan[t] because you can't easily just jump to the next word since you have to scan to where the next word begins (whitespace has to be included in the scan). But if you're looking at: apple bear cat dog elephant fox giraffe then you're scanning, at most, the first letter of each line. You know where the next word begins, since it's on a new line, and easier to jump to. just my two cents.
