It doesn't have to. Unless I'm very mistaken, it's exactly the other
way around: the window has to accept the size it's given by the window
manager; it can give the wm some hints about what size it would like
to have, but in the end, it's the wm that decides (they are called
aspect _hints_ for a reason).
Anyway, dwm does honor at least the most common sizehints (min/max
size, inc) in floating mode; dunno what hints mplayer uses, but I
guess dwm could handle them too (if they are plain X11 sizehints, not
EWMH or such).
